Some backstory

This website makeover project started as many do: the Client reached out to let me know that their current site just doesn’t “do it for them.”

What’s the “it” in these cases? It’s almost always the same. “It” = people sometimes come to the site but the phone doesn’t ring. Or, people come to the site and then leave after a few seconds. We hear that one a lot. Another one we hear a lot is that the site’s message just doesn’t seem to resonate with people anymore. My favorite is this one: “Why is it that 90% of our traffic comes from foreign countries?”

It’s vital that we as brands put energy into updating our websites regularly, both in the messaging and in the presentation of those messages.

The former Beneflex site was build in or around 2006 and it was definitely in need of a rethink. The messaging was off and the important information was very hard to find. The site was also very difficult to navigate on mobile devices. All of these issues are characteristic of sites build 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago for that matter.

Getting Started with this project involved going back to basics and revisiting what was important to their prospects and customers, and positioning those basics into a narrative designed to inspire confidence, trust, and comfort. These are three very important tenants in Beneflex’s industry and we moved these elements up front and moved some of the deeper information to a background position.

One major error that I see on very many websites these days is that the website messaging tends to be all about the brand. In most cases, this is a fail. The messaging needs to be all about the visitor first, and then we present relevance to the brand later.

Miscellany

  • X and Cornerstone: Client Requirement for ease of management coupled with a desire to be able to deploy new designs and layouts on a regular basis as changes in the industry occur led us to the obvious decision to build in Theme.co’s X framework. Cornerstone is a best-in-class Visual Page Builder that can be used to build and edit pages with a bare minimum of experience or web knowledge.
  • Hosting: BeneflexSB.com is hosted on WPEngine Manage WordPress Hosting, which we feel is just about the best thing out there right now for secure and reliable WordPress hosting.
  • Privacy Policy: You might not realize that having a Privacy Policy on your website is not just a very good idea; it’s the law! We’re using the excellent iubenda system for managing and a displaying dynamic Privacy Policy in the site footer that is automatically and regularly updated by the iubenda compliance team with little to no effort on our part. Talk about piece of mind! This is the best system currently available for managing the ever-changing disclosure requirements in an affordable and lightweight package.
  • Offsite Backups: WPEngine offers daily snapshot backups and their system allows for rapid restore from a backup should anything happen to your site. Still, I prefer to have offsite backups in place for the purpose of redundancy. We’re using UpdraftPlus to create these daily site backups and send them to Dropbox for safe storage.

Website Makeover

It’s always fun to look at some snapshots from the way-back machine and see how far we’ve come. These shots represent what the site looked like when we were brought in to perform a website makeover.
