Kymberlee Weil is the Strategy Samurai, a TEDx Speaker Coach, Author, Producer of TEDxSantaBarbara and an all-around bonafide Bad-Ass. And seriously, she really is a Samurai. Her site is designed to promote her invite-only workshops and paid coaching sessions. This is the 3rd site we’ve built for her in the past 5 years, as Kymberlee understands the importance of keeping her brand updated and looking its best.

Some backstory

Kymberlee had created a few iterations of the Strategic Samurai website over the years, and had some experience of using ready WordPress themes. The first version of her site was put together on a Themify theme, and the second iteration of the site was built on a Genesis Child theme.

Kymberlee quickly came to realize that these off-the-shelf themes allowed her to quickly get a site up, but the restrictions inherent in working with such themes had her feeling very limited in her ability to “WOW” the high-end clientele she serves.

For this project we decided to go with Theme.co’s excellent X Theme framework, which is based on their Cornerstone visual page builder. This framework allows us to build quickly, with precision, anything that we can envision in the design-and-plan phase. There is quite literally no limit to what we can do with it. Kymberlee can even manage her on-page content on her own without having to come back to us for every little thing, though she knows we’re available to help out with as much or as little as she needs.

Gotta get paid..

StrategicSamurai.com is not selling products or services at this time, but the website does offer visitors the opportunity to register for paid training workshops. This purchase process is complicated by the variations in attendee packages made available for each event.

For this reason we were able to forego a traditional eCommerce system such as WooCommerce in favor of building out some event registration forms using Gravity Forms to handle the logistics and front-end display duties, and we plugged Stripe into the back end as a merchant gateway. Stripe collects the money from the buyer and deposits it into the client bank account. Meanwhile, Gravity Forms is also integrated with Mailchimp so that each event registrant is subscribed to a customer list there which triggers an automated Mailchimp Workflow causing a welcome packet to be emailed out immediately while placing the customer into a newsletter queue.

We’re big fans of Gravity Forms, and I’ve written a bit about the benefits of using Gravity Forms here on the blog.

Miscellany

  • Hosting: StrategicSamurai.com is hosted on WPEngine Manage WordPress Hosting, which we feel is just about the best thing out there right now for secure and reliable WordPress hosting.
  • Privacy Policy: You might not realize that having a Privacy Policy on your website is not just a very good idea; it’s the law! We’re using the excellent iubenda system for managing and a displaying dynamic Privacy Policy in the site footer that is automatically and regularly updated by the iubenda compliance team with little to no effort on our part. Talk about piece of mind! This is the best system currently available for managing the ever-changing disclosure requirements in an affordable and lightweight package.image
  • Offsite Backups: WPEngine offers daily snapshot backups and their system allows for rapid restore from a backup should anything happen to your site. Still, I prefer to have offsite backups in place for the purpose of redundancy. We’re using UpdraftPlus to create these daily site backups and send them to Dropbox for safe storage.
  • Custom Testimonials System.
  • ConvertPlug: Lead Generation Pop-ups made easy.
  • Social Sharing: We’re using Social Warfare for social share, social follow and for creating retweet boxes to embed in blog posts. Social Warfare is not free, but it’s worth every penny.300x250

That’s one happy Samurai!

  • Christopher knows my business really well. He has taken the time to learn about my objectives and the outcomes I want from my website. His intimate understanding of my business goals makes him part of my team, in that he can offer suggestions and comment on material that I deliver them when he needs new content. He’ll ask, "Are you sure this is the most effective way to present that new offering?" Which sparks a conversation where the best idea wins, I love that.
